What are Mediterranean climate plants? by Lisa Bellora

You may be wondering what a “Mediterranean” plant is. There are 5 Mediterranean climate zones in the world. These zones are characterized by wet, rainy winters with long hot dry summers. Plants get their moisture predominantly in one season and have adapted to months of drought. These zones exist in south and western Australia, Chile, South Africa, the Mediterranean basin in Europe, and Southern California.

Succulents do not fit in this category. Although they are low water plants, succulents are used to desert climates where summer thunderstorms occur.

San Diego County has a Mediterranean climate. It is good to use plants adapted to our climate. It is best to use plants that are indigenous to our area.
